Florida Senate - 2009 (NP) SR 946 By Senator Hill 1-01026-09 2009946__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing April 28 2009, as “Workers' 3 Memorial Day” in Florida. 4 5 WHEREAS, 37 years ago Congress passed the Occupational 6 Safety and Health Act, promising every American worker the right 7 to a safe job, and 8 WHEREAS, unions and their allies have fought hard to make 9 that promise a reality, winning protections that have saved 10 hundreds of thousands of lives and prevented millions of 11 workplace injuries, and 12 WHEREAS, the toll of workplace injuries, illnesses, and 13 death nonetheless remains enormous, with 60,000 American workers 14 dying from job-related injuries each year and another 15.6 15 million workers injured on the job, and 16 WHEREAS, the unions of the AFL-CIO are committed to the 17 continuing struggle to make workers' safety a priority and to 18 keep and create good jobs in America, for American workers, and 19 WHEREAS, America's economy and the health and vigor of 20 American society depend on the availability of decent jobs for 21 American workers and on the safety of those jobs, NOW, 22 THEREFORE, 23 24 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 25 26 That April 28, 2009, is recognized as “Workers' Memorial 27 Day” in the State of Florida in honor of the many American 28 workers who have suffered injury and death on the job, and in 29 recognition of the work of the unions of the AFL-CIO to protect 30 the safety of American workers and to secure the availability of 31 decent jobs for Americans.
