A bill to be entitled
2An act relating to biomedical research; amending s.
3215.5602, F.S.; revising an annual appropriation to the
4Biomedical Research Trust Fund to fund the James and
5Esther King Biomedical Research Program; amending s.
6381.922, F.S.; revising an annual appropriation to the
7Biomedical Research Trust Fund to fund the William G.
8"Bill" Bankhead, Jr., and David Coley Cancer Research
9Program; providing an effective date.

11Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

13     Section 1.  Subsection (12) of section 215.5602, Florida
14Statutes, is amended to read:
15     215.5602  James and Esther King Biomedical Research
16Program.--
17     (12)  For the 2008-2009 Beginning in fiscal year and each
18fiscal year thereafter 2006-2007, the sum of $5,760,000 $6
19million is appropriated annually from recurring funds in the
20General Revenue Fund to the Biomedical Research Trust Fund
21within the Department of Health for purposes of the James and
22Esther King Biomedical Research Program pursuant to this
23section. From these funds up to $250,000 shall be available for
24the operating costs of the Florida Center for Universal Research
25to Eradicate Disease.
26     Section 2.  Subsection (5) of section 381.922, Florida
27Statutes, is amended to read:
28     381.922  William G. "Bill" Bankhead, Jr., and David Coley
29Cancer Research Program.--
30     (5)  For the 2008-2009 Beginning in fiscal year and each
31fiscal year thereafter 2006-2007, the sum of $8,640,000 $9
32million is appropriated annually from recurring funds in the
33General Revenue Fund to the Biomedical Research Trust Fund
34within the Department of Health for purposes of the William G.
35"Bill" Bankhead, Jr., and David Coley Cancer Research Program
36and shall be distributed pursuant to this section to provide
37grants to researchers seeking cures for cancer, with emphasis
38given to the goals enumerated in s. 381.921. From the total
39funds appropriated, an amount of up to 10 percent may be used
40for administrative expenses.
41     Section 3.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a law.
