    2         A resolution recognizing Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
    3         Inc.
    4  
    5         WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was founded at
    6  Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1908, and
    7         WHEREAS, this Greek letter organization is the first
    8  sorority established by African American college women, and
    9         WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is an
   10  international organization that has about 250,000 members in
   11  more than 900 chapters in the United States, the Bahamas,
   12  Bermuda, Great Britain, Germany, Korea, and the Virgin Islands,
   13  and
   14         WHEREAS, many of these chapters are located in communities
   15  and on college and university campuses in Florida, and
   16         WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is committed to
   17  community service and has made numerous contributions to the
   18  educational, civic, and social lives of Floridians, and
   19         WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., continues its
   20  support of the international program, “ESP,” the acronym for
   21  Extraordinary Service Programs, and
   22         WHEREAS, Dr. Patty Ball Thomas, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
   23  Inc., Florida Connection Chairman, has rendered outstanding
   24  service to the Florida political agenda by facilitating the
   25  annual AKA Day at the Capitol, and
   26         WHEREAS, Ella Springs Jones is the Centennial South
   27  Atlantic Regional Director of this great sisterhood and leads
   28  members of the sorority in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina,
   29  and
   30         WHEREAS, the largest chapter in Florida is Gamma Zeta
   31  Omega, located in Miami, and
   32         WHEREAS, Senator Frederica S. Wilson, a past South Atlantic
   33  Regional Director, and former Senator Mandy Dawson are members
   34  of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and
   35         WHEREAS, members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in
   36  Florida contribute thousands of volunteer hours implementing
   37  service programs in their respective communities, NOW,
   38  THEREFORE,

   40  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
   41  
   42         That the members of the Florida Senate recognize the
   43  commitment of members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., to
   44  community service and express special appreciation for their
   45  service in Florida.
