Florida Senate - 2010 SB 2558 By Senator Aronberg 27-01434-10 20102558__ 1 A bill to be entitled 2 An act relating to assessments for grade level 3 assignment; requiring that the Department of Education 4 adopt assessments for grade level assignment of a 5 student who attended a private school or home school 6 and who is transferring to or enrolling in public 7 school; requiring that the assessments be based upon 8 state-adopted grade level standards; requiring that 9 each school district administer the assessments for 10 grade level assignment; requiring that the assessments 11 provide objective data pertaining to each student’s 12 readiness for the appropriate grade level and the 13 student’s progress in attaining performance standards; 14 requiring that parents allow for their child to be 15 assessed regardless of the date of enrollment during 16 the school year; providing an effective date. 17 18 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 19 20 Section 1. Assessments for grade level assignment of 21 private school or home school students.— 22 (1) The Department of Education shall adopt assessments in 23 order to determine the grade level placement of any student who 24 attended a private school or home school in the previous school 25 year and who is transferring to or enrolling in a public school. 26 The assessments must be based upon state-adopted grade level 27 standards. Each school district shall administer the assessments 28 for grade level assignment to any student who is transferring 29 from a private school or home school to a public school or 30 enrolling in a public school before the student is enrolled in 31 grades 1 through 8. 32 (2) The assessments for grade level assignment must provide 33 objective data pertaining to each student’s readiness for the 34 grade level that he or she is to be enrolled in public school 35 and the student’s progress in attaining the performance 36 standards adopted by the department. 37 (3) Each parent who enrolls his or her child in a public 38 school and whose child was enrolled in a private school or home 39 school in the previous school year must allow the child to be 40 assessed for grade level assignment regardless of the date of 41 enrollment during the school year. 42 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2010.
