Florida Senate - 2010 (NP) SR 2780 By Senator Baker 20-02433B-10 20102780__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing the outstanding lifetime 3 service of Major General Douglas Burnett, Adjutant 4 General of Florida. 5 6 WHEREAS, Major General Douglas Burnett began his military 7 career in 1963, when he enlisted in the Florida Air National 8 Guard shortly after graduating from high school in Jacksonville, 9 and 10 WHEREAS, following basic training at Lackland Air Force 11 Base, in Texas, Major General Douglas Burnett attended the 12 United States Air Force Electronics School at Keesler Air Force 13 Base, in Mississippi, and 14 WHEREAS, in 1969 Major General Douglas Burnett received a 15 direct commission and attended undergraduate pilot training at 16 Randolph Air Force Base, in Texas, and 17 WHEREAS, Major General Douglas Burnett earned his wings in 18 June 1970 and, after completing F-102 training, was assigned as 19 a full-time Alert Pilot in the NORAD mission in the 125th 20 Fighter Group, and 21 WHEREAS, Major General Douglas Burnett was dual-qualified 22 in both military fighter and transport aircraft in addition to 23 flying commercially with Pan American World Airways and United 24 Airlines, accumulating over 20,000 flying hours in the T-33, F 25 102, F-106, C-26, C-130H, C-131, C-54, Boeing 727, and 26 McDonnell-Douglas DC-10, and 27 WHEREAS, Major General Douglas Burnett received a 28 bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University 29 of Southern Mississippi and is a graduate of the Command and 30 General Staff College and the Air War College, and 31 WHEREAS, Major General Douglas Burnett’s military 32 decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service 33 Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Air Force Commendation 34 Medal, the Air Force Achievement Medal, the Combat Readiness 35 Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Florida Cross, the Florida 36 Distinguished Service Medal, and the Florida Commendation Medal, 37 and 38 WHEREAS, Major General Douglas Burnett currently serves as 39 Adjutant General of Florida and is a member of the Department of 40 Defense Reserve Forces Policy Board, is actively involved with 41 the National Guard Association of the United States, having 42 served two terms on the executive council, and is a past 43 president of the National Guard Officers Association of Florida, 44 and 45 WHEREAS, Major General Douglas Burnett will be retiring as 46 a two-star general on June 27, 2010, after 47 years of service, 47 the longest serving officer in the history of the United States 48 Air Force, NOW, THEREFORE, 49 50 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 51 52 That the members of the Senate congratulate Major General 53 Douglas Burnett on his outstanding service to this state and 54 this nation and express appreciation to him for his great 55 sacrifice in protecting the freedoms enjoyed by all Americans. 56 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution, with 57 the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Major General 58 Douglas Burnett as a tangible token of the sentiments of the 59 Florida Senate.
