Florida Senate - 2010 (NP) SR 2854 By Senator Wilson 33-04982-10 20102854__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing the students, mentors, and 3 staff of the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project. 4 5 WHEREAS, the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project was 6 founded in March 1993 by Frederica S. Wilson, who was then a 7 member of the Miami-Dade County School Board, for the purpose of 8 providing at-risk boys with alternatives that lead away from a 9 life of crime and violence, and 10 WHEREAS, the goal of the 5000 Role Models of Excellence 11 Project is to instill the values of mainstream America in 12 participants through a focus on three principles: there are 13 positive and successful men in our community to emulate; there 14 are positive alternatives to self-destructive behavior and 15 succumbing to societal pitfalls; and we all are responsible for 16 preparing our children to effectively deal with the challenges 17 and struggles that confront today’s youth, and 18 WHEREAS, the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project is 19 dedicated to providing the support necessary to reclaim at-risk 20 boys, awarding thousands of dollars in renewable scholarships to 21 participants so that they may move to the next level of 22 education, and 23 WHEREAS, as part of its mission, the 5000 Role Models of 24 Excellence Project has placed many prominent Americans from all 25 across this nation in the Miami-Dade County public schools, 26 where they serve as positive role models, and 27 WHEREAS, the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project 28 continues to recruit African-American males who give of their 29 time and expertise to work with at-risk young men, NOW, 30 THEREFORE, 31 32 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 33 34 That the members of the Senate recognize the students, 35 mentors, and staff of the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project 36 and congratulate them on their success in promoting excellence 37 in the lives of at-risk young men in the Miami-Dade County 38 community.
