| 11 | Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: |
| 12 |
|
| 13 | Section 1. Paragraph (b) of subsection (1) of section |
| 14 | 112.181, Florida Statutes, is amended to read: |
| 15 | 112.181 Firefighters, paramedics, emergency medical |
| 16 | technicians, law enforcement officers, correctional probation |
| 17 | officer, correctional officers; special provisions relative to |
| 18 | certain communicable diseases.- |
| 19 | (1) DEFINITIONS.-As used in this section, the term: |
| 20 | (b) "Emergency rescue or public safety worker" means any |
| 21 | person employed full time by the state or any political |
| 22 | subdivision of the state as a firefighter, paramedic, emergency |
| 23 | medical technician, law enforcement officer, correctional |
| 24 | probation officer, or correctional officer who, in the course of |
| 25 | employment, runs a high risk of occupational exposure to |
| 26 | hepatitis, meningococcal meningitis, or tuberculosis and who is |
| 27 | not employed elsewhere in a similar capacity. However, the term |
| 28 | "emergency rescue or public safety worker" does not include any |
| 29 | person employed by a public hospital licensed under chapter 395 |
| 30 | or any person employed by a subsidiary thereof. |
| 31 | Section 2. Paragraph (g) of subsection (2) of section |
| 32 | 112.19, Florida Statutes, is amended to read: |
| 33 | 112.19 Law enforcement, correctional, and correctional |
| 34 | probation officers; death benefits.- |

| 36 | (g) Any political subdivision of the state that employs a |
| 37 | full-time law enforcement officer as defined in s. 943.10(1), or |
| 38 | a full-time correctional officer as defined in s. 943.10(2), or |
| 39 | a full-time correctional probation officer as defined in s. |
| 40 | 943.10(3) who is killed in the line of duty on or after July 1, |
| 41 | 1993, as a result of an act of violence inflicted by another |
| 42 | person while the officer is engaged in the performance of law |
| 43 | enforcement duties or as a result of an assault against the |
| 44 | officer under riot conditions shall pay the entire premium of |
| 45 | the political subdivision's health insurance plan for the |
| 46 | employee's surviving spouse until remarried, and for each |
| 47 | dependent child of the employee until the child reaches the age |
| 48 | of majority or until the end of the calendar year in which the |
| 49 | child reaches the age of 25 if: |
| 50 | 1. At the time of the employee's death, the child is |
| 51 | dependent upon the employee for support; and |
| 52 | 2. The surviving child continues to be dependent for |
| 53 | support, or the surviving child is a full-time or part-time |
| 54 | student and is dependent for support. |
| 55 | Section 3. This act shall take effect July 1, 2010. |
