House Resolution
2A resolution designating the week of May 9-15, 2010, as
3Food Allergy Awareness Week in Florida.

5     WHEREAS, food allergy is a growing public health concern in
6the United States, and
7     WHEREAS, more than 12 million Americans, or 4 percent of
8the population, have food allergies, and
9     WHEREAS, the incidence of food allergy is highest in young
10children and it is believed that approximately 3 million
11children in the United States have food allergies, and
12     WHEREAS, eight foods, including milk, eggs, peanuts, tree
13nuts, wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish, account for 90 percent of
14all food-allergic reactions, and
15     WHEREAS, there is no cure for food allergies, but
16avoidance, early recognition, and the management of reactions
17are vital measures needed to prevent serious health
18consequences, and
19     WHEREAS, food allergies have life-altering consequences and
20require that everyone involved be vigilant in protecting their
21health, NOW, THEREFORE,

23Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
24Florida:

26     That the House of Representatives designates the week of
27May 9-15, 2010, as Food Allergy Awareness Week in Florida, a
28week dedicated to educating Floridians about food allergies.
