5 | WHEREAS, food allergy is a growing public health concern in |
6 | the United States, and |
7 | WHEREAS, more than 12 million Americans, or 4 percent of |
8 | the population, have food allergies, and |
9 | WHEREAS, the incidence of food allergy is highest in young |
10 | children and it is believed that approximately 3 million |
11 | children in the United States have food allergies, and |
12 | WHEREAS, eight foods, including milk, eggs, peanuts, tree |
13 | nuts, wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish, account for 90 percent of |
14 | all food-allergic reactions, and |
15 | WHEREAS, there is no cure for food allergies, but |
16 | avoidance, early recognition, and the management of reactions |
17 | are vital measures needed to prevent serious health |
18 | consequences, and |
19 | WHEREAS, food allergies have life-altering consequences and |
20 | require that everyone involved be vigilant in protecting their |
21 | health, NOW, THEREFORE, |

23 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |

26 | That the House of Representatives designates the week of |
27 | May 9-15, 2010, as Food Allergy Awareness Week in Florida, a |
28 | week dedicated to educating Floridians about food allergies. |
