| 2 | A resolution recognizing the week of February 6-12, 2011, |
| 3 | as "Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week" in the State |
| 4 | of Florida. |

| 6 | WHEREAS, congenital heart defects are the most common birth |
| 7 | defect, and congenital heart disease is the leading cause of |
| 8 | birth-defect-related deaths worldwide, and |
| 9 | WHEREAS, in the United States, nearly twice as many |
| 10 | children die from a congenital heart defect each year than from |
| 11 | all forms of childhood cancers combined, and |
| 12 | WHEREAS, every year one out of every 150 babies born in the |
| 13 | state of Florida is born with a congenital heart defect, and |
| 14 | numerous families across the United States are facing the |
| 15 | challenges and hardships of raising children with congenital |
| 16 | heart defects, and |
| 17 | WHEREAS, some congenital heart defects are not diagnosed |
| 18 | until months or years after birth, and undiagnosed congenital |
| 19 | heart conditions cause many cases of sudden cardiac death in |
| 20 | young athletes, and |
| 21 | WHEREAS, despite these alarming statistics, newborns and |
| 22 | young athletes are not routinely screened for congenital heart |
| 23 | defects, some of which may be treated or corrected with |
| 24 | medicine, medical devices, or surgery, and |
| 25 | WHEREAS, the annual cost for surgery and care of congenital |
| 26 | heart defects exceeds $4.8 billion, NOW, THEREFORE, |

| 28 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
| 29 | Florida: |

| 31 | That the Florida House of Representatives recognizes |
| 32 | February 6-12, 2011, as "Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week" |
| 33 | in the State of Florida. |
