| 2 | A resolution recognizing the Boy Scouts of America on the |
| 3 | occasion of its 100th anniversary. |

| 5 | WHEREAS, Chicago publisher William D. Boyce incorporated |
| 6 | the Boy Scouts of America on February 8, 1910, after being |
| 7 | inspired by an English Boy Scout who guided him through a dense |
| 8 | London fog and refused a tip, explaining that he was doing his |
| 9 | Good Turn as a Scout, and |
| 10 | WHEREAS, the Boy Scouts of America was established to teach |
| 11 | the boys of the United States patriotism, courage, self- |
| 12 | reliance, and kindred values, and |
| 13 | WHEREAS, under the leadership of its founders, including |
| 14 | Daniel Carter Beard, the first National Scout Commissioner; |
| 15 | Ernest Thompson Seton, the first Chief Scout; and Dr. James E. |
| 16 | West, the first Chief Scout Executive, the national Scouting |
| 17 | movement rapidly expanded throughout the United States, and |
| 18 | WHEREAS, more than 100 million boys have strived to uphold |
| 19 | the Scout Oath: "On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to |
| 20 | God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other |
| 21 | people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally |
| 22 | awake, and morally straight," and |
| 23 | WHEREAS, the Scout Law defines that a Scout is |
| 24 | "trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, |
| 25 | obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent," and |
| 26 | WHEREAS, on August 12, 1912, the first Eagle Scout rank was |
| 27 | presented to Arthur Eldred, and more than 2 million Scouts have |
| 28 | since earned the Eagle Scout rank, and |
| 29 | WHEREAS, more than 1 million volunteer adult leaders |
| 30 | selflessly serve young people in their communities each year |
| 31 | through the Boy Scouts of America, and |
| 32 | WHEREAS, the vision of the Boy Scouts of America remains to |
| 33 | prepare every eligible boy in the United States to become a |
| 34 | responsible, participating citizen and leader who is guided by |
| 35 | the Scout Oath and Law, and |
| 36 | WHEREAS, this year, Florida's 10 local councils of the Boy |
| 37 | Scouts of America, together with the 108,000 Scouts and adult |
| 38 | leaders in the state, are celebrating Scouting's 100th |
| 39 | anniversary with the theme Celebrating the Adventure, Continuing |
| 40 | the Journey, NOW, THEREFORE, |

| 42 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
| 43 | Florida: |

| 45 | That the Boy Scouts of America is congratulated on the |
| 46 | occasion of its 100th anniversary and commended for its many |
| 47 | years of service to the youth of this state. |
| 48 | BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be |
| 49 | presented to the Alabama-Florida Council, Central Florida |
| 50 | Council, Gulf Coast Council, Gulf Ridge Council, Gulf Stream |
| 51 | Council, North Florida Council, South Florida Council, Southwest |
| 52 | Florida Council, Suwannee River Area Council, and West Central |
| 53 | Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America as a tangible token |
| 54 | of the sentiments expressed herein. |
