Florida Senate - 2011 (NP) SR 1848 By Senator Hill 1-01285A-11 20111848__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution acknowledging the contributions of Phi 3 Beta Sigma Fraternity and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and 4 recognizing March 24, 2011, as “Sigma-Zeta Day” in 5 Florida. 6 7 WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded at Howard 8 University in Washington, D.C., on January 9, 1914, by A. 9 Langston Taylor, Leonard F. Morse, and Charles I. Brown, and 10 WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, with the assistance of Phi 11 Beta Sigma, was founded at Howard University in Washington, 12 D.C., on January 16, 1920, by Arizona Cleaver, Myrtle Tyler, 13 Viola Tyler, Fannie Pettie, and Pearl Neal, and 14 WHEREAS, both Phi Beta Sigma and Zeta Phi Beta, through 15 statewide and local partnerships, address many of the challenges 16 that racial and ethnic minority groups face today such as health 17 issues and behaviors, birth of healthy babies, HIV/AIDS, and 18 teenage pregnancy, and 19 WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity currently lists 16 20 collegiate chapters and 16 alumni chapters in Florida and Zeta 21 Phi Beta Sorority’s membership numbers 16 collegiate chapters 22 and 43 alumni chapters in the state, NOW, THEREFORE, 23 24 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 25 26 That March 24, 2011, is recognized as “Sigma-Zeta Day” in 27 Florida in recognition of the many civic contributions that the 28 members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority 29 have made to this state.
