Florida Senate - 2011 (NP) SR 840 By Senator Bullard 39-01569-11 2011840__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing the bravery, heroism, and 3 dedication of fallen Miami-Dade Police Department 4 detectives Roger Castillo and Amanda Haworth and 5 expressing the gratitude of all Floridians for their 6 service. 7 8 WHEREAS, on January 20, 2011, four Miami-Dade Police 9 Department detectives, Diedre Beecher, Roger Castillo, Amanda 10 Haworth, and Oscar Plasencia, went to a Miami residence to serve 11 a murder warrant on a suspect who had a long criminal history, 12 and 13 WHEREAS, as detectives Diedre Beecher, Roger Castillo, 14 Amanda Haworth, and Oscar Plasencia interviewed the occupants of 15 the house, the 23-year-old subject of the arrest warrant opened 16 fire on them, and 17 WHEREAS, detectives Roger Castillo and Amanda Haworth were 18 shot and fatally wounded, with Detective Castillo dying at the 19 scene and Detective Haworth dying during emergency surgery at a 20 local hospital, and 21 WHEREAS, Detective Diedre Beecher sustained an injury 22 during the shootout, but survived, and Detective Oscar Plasencia 23 returned fire on the suspect, killing him, and 24 WHEREAS, Detective Roger Castillo was born in Miami and 25 grew up in Westchester, attending Royal Palm Elementary, Riviera 26 Middle School, and Southwest Miami Senior High School, and 27 WHEREAS, Detective Roger Castillo entered the Miami-Dade 28 Police Academy at age 20 and was a 21-year veteran of the Miami 29 Dade Police Department, and 30 WHEREAS, when Detective Roger Castillo was assigned to 31 train rookie officer Debbie Perez, he met the love of his life, 32 whom he married in 1995, and 33 WHEREAS, Detective Roger Castillo was devoted to Debbie and 34 their three sons, Anthony, Michael, and Brian, and treasured the 35 time they spent together as a family, and 36 WHEREAS, Detective Amanda Haworth was a graduate of Miami 37 Sunset High School and Miami-Dade College and was a 23-year 38 veteran of the Miami-Dade Police Department, where she served 39 since January 2003 as a member of the Strategic and Specialized 40 Investigations Bureau, Career Criminal Section, and 41 WHEREAS, Detective Amanda Haworth was devoted to her 13 42 year-old son, Austin, often playing baseball with him in their 43 back yard and never missing a game played by the Weston Red 44 Hawks, Austin’s team, and 45 WHEREAS, Miami-Dade detectives Roger Castillo and Amanda 46 Haworth bravely served, and Miami-Dade detectives Deidre Beecher 47 and Oscar Plasencia continue to show great valor in serving, the 48 residents of this state, and 49 WHEREAS, Miami-Dade detectives Roger Castillo and Amanda 50 Haworth are heroes, not because of how they died, but because of 51 how they lived, NOW, THEREFORE, 52 53 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 54 55 That this legislative body does pause in its deliberations 56 to pay its respects to the dedication of fallen Miami-Dade 57 Police Department detectives Roger Castillo and Amanda Haworth 58 and to express the gratitude of all Floridians for their 59 service.
