2A resolution recognizing Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

4     WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was founded at
5Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1908, and
6     WHEREAS, this Greek letter organization is the first
7sorority established by African American college women, and
8     WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is an
9international organization that has over 260,000 members in more
10than 900 chapters in the United States, the Bahamas, Bermuda,
11Great Britain, Germany, Korea, and the Virgin Islands, and
12     WHEREAS, many of these chapters are located in communities
13and on college and university campuses in Florida, and
14     WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is committed to
15community service and has made numerous contributions to the
16educational, civic, and social lives of Floridians, and
17     WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., continues its
18support of the international program "Empowering our Communities
19with Global Leadership through Timeless Service," and
20     WHEREAS, bound by its humanitarianism and credo of service
21that extends to all mankind, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.,
22continues to play a role in relief efforts for the citizens of
23Haiti and in addressing the current needs of the Haitian people
24in the wake of the catastrophic earthquake in 2010, and
25     WHEREAS, Marsha Lewis-Brown is the Centennial South
26Atlantic Regional Director of this great sisterhood and leads
27members of the sorority in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina,
28and
29     WHEREAS, Representative Mia Jones and Representative
30Geraldine Thompson are members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
31Inc., and
32     WHEREAS, members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.,
33in Florida contribute thousands of volunteer hours implementing
34service programs in their respective communities, NOW,
35THEREFORE,

37Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
38Florida:

40     That the members of the Florida House of Representatives
41recognize the commitment of members of Alpha Kappa Alpha
42Sorority, Inc., to worldwide service and express special
43appreciation for their service in Florida.
