House Resolution
2A resolution acknowledging the invaluable contributions
3made to the people of Florida by Delta Sigma Theta
4Sorority, Inc., and recognizing March 20-23, 2011, as "The
517th Annual Delta Days at the Florida Capitol."

7     WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is a public
8service organization founded on January 13, 1913, by 22
9outstanding women at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and
10     WHEREAS, nearly 6 weeks after its founding, the first
11public act of the sorority was its participation in the Women's
12Suffrage Movement, demanding rights for women, particularly the
13right to vote, and
14     WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is a sisterhood
15of college-educated women committed to implementing the
16sorority's mission through its Five-Point Program Thrust:
17economic development, educational development, physical and
18mental health, political awareness and involvement, and
19international awareness and involvement, and
20     WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., recently
21celebrated 98 years of exemplary service and support to local
22communities, leading dialogue on public policy issues,
23supporting quality education, producing new projects to
24stimulate current and future economic growth, and improving the
25holistic well-being of minority populations internationally, and
26     WHEREAS, with more than 200,000 college-educated women and
27more than 950 chapters worldwide, 52 of which are located in
28Florida and the Bahamas, members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority
29are clearly focused and visible as corporate and civic leaders,
30productive public officials, acclaimed academicians, and
31activists in their own right, and
32     WHEREAS, for the past 16 years, the sorority's Florida
33chapters have conducted "Delta Days at the Florida Capitol" to
34provide information to state legislators and government
35executives which is vital to developing public policy; to host a
36reception for state legislators and government executives; and
37to monitor the progress of pending legislation related to
38significant public policy issues, and
39     WHEREAS, on March 20-23, 2011, under the leadership of Lois
40Gilder, Interim Southern Regional Director, the members of the
4152 chapters of the sorority that now serve Florida and the
42Bahamas will converge on Tallahassee to conduct the 17th Annual
43Delta Days at the Florida Capitol and to provide special
44recognition at the Fifth Annual Honorable Carrie P. Meek Servant
45Leadership Luncheon to the state's Delta Dears, who have blazed
46trails in social advocacy and public service, and
47     WHEREAS, Senators Arthenia L. Joyner and Larcenia J.
48Bullard and Representative Gwyndolen Clarke-Reed are esteemed
49members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., NOW, THEREFORE,

51Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
52Florida:

54     That the Florida House of Representatives commends Delta
55Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., for its contributions to the people
56of Florida, and recognizes March 20-23, 2011, as "The 17th
57Annual Delta Days at the Florida Capitol."
