| 5 | WHEREAS, in the United States, six to eight million |
| 6 | homeless pets enter animal shelters each year, with as many as |
| 7 | four million of these animals being euthanized, including |
| 8 | healthy, loving cats, dogs, kittens, and puppies, and |
| 9 | WHEREAS, the faltering economy has forced many pet owners |
| 10 | to surrender their beloved pets to local animal shelters, which |
| 11 | are already overburdened, and |
| 12 | WHEREAS, Florida communities are experiencing unprecedented |
| 13 | budget shortfalls, which is placing an increased strain on local |
| 14 | animal shelters, threatening the lives of thousands of animals, |
| 15 | and |
| 16 | WHEREAS, Florida animal shelters cannot save and support |
| 17 | the large numbers of animals arriving at their doors, and |
| 18 | WHEREAS, adopting a pet from a local animal shelter is one |
| 19 | way that Floridians can make a difference in these uncertain |
| 20 | economic times, giving hope to those who must surrender their |
| 21 | pet that the pet will be loved and cared for, and |
| 22 | WHEREAS, adopting a pet from a local animal shelter deeply |
| 23 | enriches the lives of those who open their homes and hearts to |
| 24 | shelter animals, NOW, THEREFORE, |

| 27 | Florida: |
| 28 | That April 2011 is recognized as "Adopt a Shelter Pet |
| 29 | Month" in Florida. |
