5 | WHEREAS, in 1878, Palm Beach received its name when early |
6 | settlers planted coconuts from the shipwrecked cargo ship |
7 | Providencia, which ran ashore near the island while en route |
8 | from Cuba to Spain, and |
9 | WHEREAS, in 1893, Henry Flagler, the Standard Oil tycoon |
10 | and owner of the Florida East Coast Railway, declared Palm Beach |
11 | a "veritable paradise" and began buying acreage across the |
12 | island, and |
13 | WHEREAS, a year later, Mr. Flagler opened the Royal |
14 | Poinciana Hotel, which was once the world's largest wooden |
15 | structure, and |
16 | WHEREAS, on April 17, 1911, the Town of Palm Beach was |
17 | incorporated and soon began developing long-range plans for the |
18 | island's growth and progress, and |
19 | WHEREAS, today, the Town of Palm Beach is a fully developed |
20 | community, world-renowned for its extraordinary beauty, quality |
21 | of life, and small-town character, and |
22 | WHEREAS, the Town of Palm Beach looks forward to an ever |
23 | brighter future as it celebrates its history during the Town of |
24 | Palm Beach's Centennial Celebration Weekend, which will be held |
25 | April 15-17, 2011, NOW, THEREFORE, |

31 | occasion of its Centennial Celebration and its residents are |
