1	House Resolution
2	A resolution recognizing the outstanding achievements of
3	the students, alumni, faculty, and staff of New College of
4	Florida on the occasion of its 50th anniversary as an
5	institution of higher education.

7	WHEREAS, New College was founded in 1960 and dedicated its
8	campus on the grounds of the former Charles Ringling estate on
9	Sarasota's bayfront in 1962, and
10	WHEREAS, in dedicating the campus of New College,
11	celebrants symbolically mixed soil from Harvard University, the
12	oldest institution of higher education in the nation, with that
13	of New College, and
14	WHEREAS, New College matriculated its first class of
15	students in 1964, and the charter class graduated in 1967, and
16	WHEREAS, for 50 years, New College has been dedicated to
17	academic excellence, remaining true to its mission to provide
18	academically talented students with an individualized and
19	challenging educational program by promoting independent study
20	and encouraging undergraduate research and close interaction
21	with faculty members, and
22	WHEREAS, New College became part of the State University
23	System in 1975, gained independence as the 11th member of the
24	system in 2001, and, as New College of Florida, was designated
25	the State Honors College for the liberal arts and sciences, and
26	WHEREAS, New College has produced national and
27	international scholarship award winners and grant recipients,
28	including a Fields Medalist, a Rhodes Scholar, a British
29	Marshall Scholar, a Gates Cambridge Scholar, numerous National
30	Science Foundation Fellows, and one of the highest per capita
31	numbers of Fulbright Scholars in the nation, and
32	WHEREAS, New College has been recognized as one of the
33	nation's leading undergraduate liberal arts and sciences
34	colleges by U.S. News & World Report, the Wall Street Journal,
35	Forbes, Money, Time, the Princeton Review, and other
36	publications, NOW, THEREFORE,

38	Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
39	Florida:

41	That the Florida House of Representatives takes great pride
42	in recognizing the 50th anniversary of New College of Florida
43	and salutes the outstanding achievements of the students,
44	alumni, faculty, and staff of New College.
45	BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
46	presented to New College President Mike Michalson as a tangible
47	token of the sentiments expressed herein.
