2A resolution recognizing June 2011 as "Caribbean Heritage
3Month" in Florida.

5     WHEREAS, from a region that conjures images of a scenic
6paradise, Caribbean Americans are as vibrant as the islands from
7which they come, possessing a wealth of talent and history that
8reverberates throughout this great state and nation, and
9     WHEREAS, as educators, authors, community leaders and
10activists, musicians, and politicians, Caribbean Americans have
11made their mark in every facet of our society and have
12contributed to the betterment and diversity of our state and
13nation, and
14     WHEREAS, counted among many famous sons and daughters of
15the Caribbean are activist W.E.B. Du Bois; Secretary of the
16Treasury Alexander Hamilton; Secretary of State Colin Powell;
17actress Cicely Tyson; actor Sidney Poitier; author, poet, and
18civil rights activist James Weldon Johnson; musician, actor, and
19activist Harry Belafonte; and numerous others who have displayed
20great strength and resiliency while serving as pioneers among
21the people of the Caribbean, and
22     WHEREAS, the modern political influences of Caribbean
23Americans are evident in the election of former member of the
24House of Representatives, Jennifer Carroll of Trinidad and
25Tobago, as Florida's first Caribbean American Lieutenant
26Governor; the appointment of former member of the House of
27Representatives, Ronald Brisé of Haiti, to the Florida Public
28Service Commission; and the continued representation in both the
29House of Representatives and the Senate by members from the
30Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, Haiti, and Jamaica, and
31     WHEREAS, the United States has thrived as a country of
32immigrants, united by common values and by the promise of a
33better tomorrow, NOW, THEREFORE,

35Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
36Florida:

38     That June 2011 is recognized as "Caribbean Heritage Month"
39in the State of Florida to encourage communities and individuals
40throughout the state and the nation to honor their cultural and
41historical bonds and be reminded that America's greatness lies
42in its diversity.
