House Resolution
2A resolution honoring the Haitian American Nurses
3Association of Florida, Inc.

5     WHEREAS, in 1984, two registered professional nurses
6practicing in Miami, Alice Casimir and Jacqueline Dasque, saw
7the need to establish an organization that would provide health
8care services to migrant workers in the Homestead area and,
9along with other professionals, founded the Haitian American
10Nurses Association of Florida, Inc., and
11     WHEREAS, this nonprofit membership organization was
12established in order to provide Haitian nurses with the
13opportunity to unite as a group, to share and provide ideas of
14interest to the profession of nursing, and to become effectively
15involved with the issues and services relevant to the health and
16welfare of Florida's Haitian community, and
17     WHEREAS, the Haitian American Nurses Association of
18Florida, Inc., strives to increase the enrollment of Haitian
19students in nursing schools in both Florida and Haiti through
20scholarships, educational and mentoring opportunities, and
21facilitation of community networking among its members, and
22     WHEREAS, in collaboration with other community
23organizations, the association provides culturally sensitive
24care while promoting health and wellness by offering annual
25preventive health screenings and providing education regarding
26high blood pressure, diabetic management, immunization,
27HIV/AIDS, obesity, various cancers, heart disease, aging, and
28other health concerns, and
29     WHEREAS, in its commitment to reshaping the health care
30delivery system for citizens of Florida and of Haiti, the
31Haitian American Nurses Association of Florida, Inc., has
32partnered with many organizations throughout the state and
33nation, including Miami Dade College, the Miami-Dade County
34Health Department, the Florida Heart Research Institute, the
35Florida Nurses Association, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of
36Florida, the Haitian American Professionals Coalition, the
37American Diabetes Association, and the American Cancer Society,
38among others, NOW, THEREFORE,

40Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
41Florida:

43     That the Haitian American Nurses Association of Florida,
44Inc., is honored for its commitment to health care and education
45both within the Haitian community and throughout the state and
46is commended for its invaluable contributions to public health
47and well-being.
