5 | WHEREAS, the main campus of Florida State University is |
6 | located in Tallahassee on the oldest continuous site of higher |
7 | education in the state and hosts the state's oldest chapter of |
8 | Phi Beta Kappa, chartered in 1935, and |
9 | WHEREAS, Florida State University was designated a |
10 | "Research I" doctoral-granting institution in 1994 by the |
11 | Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, joining an |
12 | elite group of the nation's top research universities, and |
13 | WHEREAS, Florida State University offers graduate and |
14 | undergraduate degrees in 322 programs within 15 independent |
15 | colleges and schools that are taught by 2,285 faculty members, |
16 | which has included 12 National Academy of Sciences members and |
17 | five Nobel Laureates, and |
18 | WHEREAS, Florida State University established its Office of |
19 | National Fellowships in January 2005 and, since that date, its |
20 | students have been awarded more than 80 nationally competitive |
21 | scholarships and fellowships, including three Rhodes |
22 | scholarships, three Truman scholarships, five Goldwater |
23 | scholarships, five Hollings scholarships, three Pickering |
24 | fellowships, and 36 Fulbright scholarships, and |
25 | WHEREAS, Florida State University is home to the National |
26 | High Magnetic Field Laboratory, where the world's most powerful |
27 | magnet is used for research in unexplored areas of science and |
28 | in engineering technologies for a new century, and |
29 | WHEREAS, Florida State University established the Institute |
30 | for Energy Systems, Economics, and Sustainability, which is a |
31 | public resource that unites researchers from the disciplines of |
32 | engineering, the natural sciences, law, urban and regional |
33 | planning, geography, and economics to generate research leading |
34 | to the development of a successful sustainable energy strategy |
35 | for the state, and |
36 | WHEREAS, the Florida State University College of Medicine, |
37 | together with its statewide network of more than 1,500 |
38 | physician-faculty members, is celebrating its 11th anniversary |
39 | as the nation's newest fully accredited medical school as it |
40 | continues to fulfill its unique statutory mission of training |
41 | patient-centered physicians for elder, rural, minority, |
42 | underserved, and other populations of the state, and |
43 | WHEREAS, Florida State University's longstanding tradition |
44 | of promoting racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity, together |
45 | with its aggressive recruitment of diverse groups of students, |
46 | continues to enrich the university's college experience and the |
47 | lives of its students, and |
48 | WHEREAS, on February 1, 2010, Florida State University |
49 | welcomed its alumnus, Dr. Eric J. Barron, as the university's |
50 | 14th president, NOW, THEREFORE, |

52 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
53 | Florida: |

55 | That April 12, 2011, is designated as "Florida State |
56 | University Day" in Florida in recognition of Florida State |
57 | University's contributions as an outstanding institution of |
58 | higher education. |
59 | BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be |
60 | presented to the President of Florida State University, Dr. Eric |
61 | J. Barron, as a tangible token of the sentiments expressed |
62 | herein. |
