Florida Senate - 2012 SB 1138 By Senator Oelrich 14-01233-12 20121138__ 1 A bill to be entitled 2 An act relating to continuing education or inservice 3 training for public school personnel; creating s. 4 1012.583, F.S.; requiring the Commissioner of 5 Education to develop recommendations to incorporate 6 instruction in suicide prevention into continuing 7 education or inservice training requirements; 8 requiring the Department of Education to incorporate 9 the recommendations into existing requirements; 10 authorizing the State Board of Education to adopt 11 rules; providing an effective date. 12 13 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 14 15 Section 1. Section 1012.583, Florida Statutes, is created 16 to read: 17 1012.583 Continuing education or inservice training in 18 suicide prevention.— 19 (1) The Legislature recognizes the importance of educating 20 public school personnel in the prevention of youth suicide and 21 providing public school personnel with access to suicide 22 prevention educational resources. 23 (2) The Commissioner of Education shall develop 24 recommendations to incorporate instruction in suicide prevention 25 into continuing education or inservice training requirements for 26 instructional and administrative personnel. These 27 recommendations shall include, but are not limited to, 28 instruction regarding the use of available state and local 29 educational resources that promote awareness about, and 30 prevention of, youth suicide. 31 (3) Beginning with the 2012-2013 school year, the 32 Department of Education shall incorporate the recommendations of 33 the commissioner into existing requirements for the continuing 34 education or inservice training of instructional and 35 administrative personnel. The requirements of this section may 36 not add to the total hours required for continuing education or 37 inservice training as currently established by the department. 38 (4) The State Board of Education may adopt rules pursuant 39 to ss. 120.536(1) and 120.54 to implement this section. 40 Section 2. This act shall take effect upon becoming a law.
