House Comm: RCS . 02/01/2012 . . . . ————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— ————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— The Committee on Governmental Oversight and Accountability (Margolis) recommended the following: 1 Senate Amendment (with title amendment) 2 3 Delete everything after the resolving clause 4 and insert: 5 That the Congress of the United States is urged to pass HR 6 2918, the “Taiwan Policy Act of 2011,” in recognition that the 7 passage of the act is a necessary step toward nurturing and 8 maintaining the diverse interests that bind the people of the 9 United States and the people of Taiwan. 10 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be 11 dispatched to the President of the United States, to the 12 President of the United States Senate, to the Speaker of the 13 United States House of Representatives, and to each member of 14 the Florida delegation to the United States Congress. 15 16 17 ================= T I T L E A M E N D M E N T ================ 18 And the title is amended as follows: 19 Delete everything before the resolving clause 20 and insert: 21 A bill to be entitled 22 A memorial to the Congress of the United States, 23 urging Congress to pass HR 2918, the Taiwan Policy Act 24 of 2011. 25 26 WHEREAS, HR 2918, the Taiwan Policy Act of 2011, was 27 introduced on September 14, 2011, and is currently pending 28 before the 112th Congress, and 29 WHEREAS, HR 2918 seeks to encourage and strengthen the 30 commercial, cultural, and other interests between the people of 31 the United States and Taiwan, as set forth in the Taiwan 32 Relations Act which was enacted in 1979 (Public Law 96–8; 22 33 U.S.C. ss. 3301 et seq.) and which has served for 33 years as 34 the foundation of United States-Taiwan relations, and 35 WHEREAS, we are reminded that the Taiwan Relations Act has 36 functioned to ensure peace and stability in the Western Pacific 37 and that it continues to be a priority of the United States to 38 maintain that international stability, and 39 WHEREAS, this nation must be vigilant to encourage the 40 secure future of Taiwan and must do all that is within our 41 ability to encourage the military self-defense capabilities of 42 Taiwan, and 43 WHEREAS, economically, Taiwan is the ninth largest trading 44 partner with the United States and that trade translated into 45 approximately $57 billion in 2010, and 46 WHEREAS, both nations realize that it is in the best 47 economic interests of the United States and in the national 48 security interests of Taiwan that these two nations continue to 49 cultivate the intricate ties between them, NOW, THEREFORE,
