    1                        A bill to be entitled                      
    2         An act relating to school attendance; amending s.
    3         1003.21, F.S.; providing that a child is eligible for
    4         admission to the first grade in a public school if the
    5         child has attained the age of 6 years on or before
    6         September 1 of the school year and has been enrolled
    7         in a public school or has satisfactorily completed the
    8         requirements for kindergarten in a private school
    9         attended in the state; providing an effective date.

   11  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
   12  
   13         Section 1. Paragraph (b) of subsection (1) of section
   14  1003.21, Florida Statutes, is amended to read:
   15         1003.21 School attendance.—
   16         (1)
   17         (b) A child is eligible for admission to the first grade in
   18  a public school if the Any child who has:
   19         1. Attained the age of 6 years on or before September 1 of
   20  the school year and who has been enrolled in a public school; or
   21  who has attained the age of 6 years on or before September 1 and
   22  has
   23         2. Satisfactorily completed the requirements for
   24  kindergarten in a private school attended in the state from
   25  which the district school board accepts transfer of academic
   26  credit, or who otherwise meets the criteria for admission or
   27  transfer in a manner similar to that applicable to other grades,
   28  shall progress according to the district’s student progression
   29  plan.

   31  However, nothing in This paragraph does not section shall
   32  authorize the state or any school district to oversee or
   33  exercise control over the curricula or academic programs of
   34  private schools or home education programs.
   35         Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2012.
