Florida Senate - 2012 (NP) SR 2020 By Senator Rich 34-01824-12 20122020__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing 2012 as the “Year of the 3 Girl” and celebrating 100 years of Girl Scouting in 4 the State of Florida. 5 6 WHEREAS, March 12, 2012, marks the 100th Anniversary of the 7 Girl Scouts of the United States of America, which began in 1912 8 when Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low, a native of Savannah, Georgia, 9 gathered 18 girls to provide them the opportunity to develop 10 physically, mentally, and spiritually, and 11 WHEREAS, for 100 years, Girl Scouting has helped build 12 courage, confidence, and character in millions of girls and 13 women who aspire to make the world a better place, and 14 WHEREAS, this leadership model assists girls in developing 15 skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, cooperation, 16 team building, conflict resolution, advocacy, and other 17 important life skills, and 18 WHEREAS, the award-winning Girl Scout Leadership Program 19 aids girls in discovering themselves and their values, 20 connecting with others, and taking action to make the world a 21 better place, and 22 WHEREAS, core programs that focus on science, technology, 23 engineering, math, environmental stewardship, healthy living, 24 financial literacy, and global citizenship help girls develop a 25 solid foundation in leadership, and 26 WHEREAS, since its founding in 2000, the Girl Scout 27 Research Institute, an extension of the Girl Scouts of the 28 Unites States of America, has become an internationally 29 recognized center that conducts original research, evaluations, 30 reviews, and surveys; releases critical facts and findings; and 31 provides resources essential for the advancement of the well 32 being and safety of girls living in today’s world, and 33 WHEREAS, through the dedication, time, and talent of 34 volunteers of different backgrounds, abilities, and areas of 35 expertise, the Girl Scout program is available to more than 36 100,000 participating girls in grades K-12 across the state of 37 Florida, and 38 WHEREAS, more than 50 million American women are Girl Scout 39 alumnae today, and 3.3 million girls and adult volunteers in the 40 United States are active members in the Girls Scouts, and 41 WHEREAS, Girl Scouts is the largest member of the World 42 Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, a global movement 43 comprised of more than 10 million girls in 145 countries 44 worldwide, NOW, THEREFORE, 45 46 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 47 48 That 2012 be recognized as the “Year of the Girl” and that 49 the Girl Scouts of the United States of America be applauded for 50 100 years of leadership and expertise as the voice for and of 51 girls.
