    1                          Senate Resolution                        
    2         A resolution recognizing March 2013 as “Aaron Cohen
    3         Bike Safety Awareness Month” in Florida.
    4  
    5         WHEREAS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
    6  estimates that 4 percent of all motor vehicle crashes in Florida
    7  involve bicycles, with the total annual cost of bicyclist injury
    8  and death estimated at more than $4 billion, and
    9         WHEREAS, in 2011, more than 4,600 cyclists were seriously
   10  injured in traffic crashes on Florida roads and highways, with
   11  120 cyclists killed, a 58 percent increase from 2010, and
   12         WHEREAS, the 10 counties in Florida with the highest number
   13  of bicycle fatalities between 2006 and 2011 are Alachua,
   14  Broward, Duval, Hillsborough, Lee, Miami-Dade, Orange, Palm
   15  Beach, Pasco, and Pinellas, and Florida continues to rank among
   16  the top states in the nation for injury and fatality among
   17  bicyclists and pedestrians hit by cars, and
   18         WHEREAS, on February 15, 2012, Aaron Cohen, a 36-year-old
   19  experienced cyclist and avid runner, was struck and killed in a
   20  hit-and-run accident on the Rickenbacker Causeway, which leads
   21  to Key Biscayne in Miami-Dade County, and
   22         WHEREAS, Aaron Cohen is remembered by all who knew him as a
   23  loving husband to his wife, Patricia, and father to his two
   24  children, Lily and Aiden, and as a kind and compassionate friend
   25  to so many, NOW, THEREFORE,

   29         That we recognize March 2013 as “Aaron Cohen Bike Safety
   30  Awareness Month” in Florida.
