Florida Senate - 2013 (NP) SR 1814 By Senator Smith 31-02787-13 20131814__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing April 2, 2013, as “FSU Day” 3 in Florida. 4 5 WHEREAS, the Tallahassee campus of Florida State University 6 is the oldest continuous site of higher education in Florida and 7 holds the state’s first chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, which was 8 chartered in 1935, and 9 WHEREAS, in 1994, the Florida State University joined an 10 elite group of the nation’s top research universities, being 11 designated as a “Research I” institution by the Carnegie 12 Foundation, and 13 WHEREAS, today, Florida State University offers graduate 14 and undergraduate degrees in 324 programs within 16 independent 15 colleges and schools, taught by a faculty of 1,737 members, 16 which has included 12 National Academy of Sciences members and 17 six Nobel Laureates, and 18 WHEREAS, the freshman class entering Florida State 19 University in the 2012 fall semester was one of the most 20 academically accomplished freshman classes in the university’s 21 history, with an average high school GPA of 4.01, an average SAT 22 score of 1,881, and an average composite ACT score of 28.2, and 23 WHEREAS, academic accomplishments of accepted honors 24 students entering Florida State University in the 2012 fall 25 semester are even more impressive, with an average high school 26 GPA of 4.35, and 27 WHEREAS, Florida State University was ranked by U.S. News & 28 World Report as the nation’s “most efficient” university, a 29 recognition of the university’s excellence in devoting its 30 resources to student instruction, research, student services, 31 and other related areas, and 32 WHEREAS, the Florida State University College of Medicine 33 generates nearly $1 billion in economic activity in Florida 34 every 6 years and has produced alumni practicing in numerous 35 rural communities, including Arcadia, Bonifay, Blountstown, 36 Clermont, Crestview, Marianna, Perry, and Winter Haven, which 37 traditionally have faced difficulty in recruiting new 38 physicians, and 39 WHEREAS, the college experience continues to enrich the 40 lives of Florida State University students due to its long 41 standing tradition of promoting racial, ethnic, and cultural 42 diversity on campus, along with the aggressive recruitment of 43 diverse groups of students, NOW, THEREFORE, 44 45 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 46 47 That the members of the Florida Senate recognize April 2, 48 2013, as “FSU Day” in Florida, and celebrate Florida State 49 University’s contribution as an outstanding institution of 50 higher education. 51 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be 52 presented to Florida State University President Eric J. Barron, 53 Ph.D., as a tangible token of the sentiments expressed in this 54 resolution.
