Florida Senate - 2013 (NP) SR 1882 By Senator Dean 5-04402-13 20131882__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing the 100th anniversary of Advent 3 Christian Village. 4 5 WHEREAS, established in 1913 on 1,000 acres of land donated 6 by Thomas Dowling and Richard W. Sears to the Advent Christian 7 Church, the American Advent Christian Home and Orphanage was 8 chartered and incorporated in the State of Florida in 1915, and 9 was the state’s first retirement home, and 10 WHEREAS, in spite of natural disasters, the Great 11 Depression, severe economic shortages, and other hardships, the 12 Home and Orphanage thrived with the support of Advent Christian 13 churches across the country, and despite taking slightly 14 different forms, its mission has remained in keeping with the 15 spirit of its founding: to express Christ’s love by providing 16 compassionate care and quality comprehensive services for senior 17 adults, families with special needs, and children in a secure, 18 supportive residential setting, and 19 WHEREAS, now known as Advent Christian Village, the humble 20 Home and Orphanage has evolved into a self-contained community 21 that welcomes people of all faiths, is made up of over 800 22 residents and members, and serves an additional 300 people in 23 the surrounding community of Dowling Park, and 24 WHEREAS, Advent Christian Village consists of 300 rental 25 apartments ranging in style from mid-rise apartment buildings to 26 garden apartments, clusters, duplexes, and single-dwelling 27 homes, while the Village Square offers a grocery store, a bank, 28 a branch of the United States Postal Service, a beauty salon and 29 barber shop, gift shops, a unique resale store, an arts-and 30 crafts shop, and a cafe, and its caring staff provide home care, 31 social services, housekeeping, and transportation services, and 32 WHEREAS, the W. B. Copeland Medical Center, Advent 33 Christian Village’s state-of-the-art medical clinic, provides 34 medical care in the areas of family practice, geriatrics, 35 women’s health, dentistry, and urgent care; offers various 36 laboratory, testing, and radiological services; and provides 37 outpatient rehabilitative services such as physical therapy, 38 speech and occupational therapy, osteoporosis and joint care, 39 pain management, stroke rehabilitation, and cognitive and 40 communication therapy, among others, and 41 WHEREAS, as part of its centennial celebration, Advent 42 Christian Village held the dedication and inaugural walk of the 43 Village Heritage Trail, a walking path through the village along 44 which are marked the locations of significant buildings from the 45 early days of the village, complete with photographs and a 46 description of how each structure served the ministry, allowing 47 residents and visitors to reflect on 100 years of care, 48 compassion, and excellence, NOW, THEREFORE, 49 50 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 51 52 That Advent Christian Village is honored for a century of 53 invaluable service to the citizens of this state and is heartily 54 congratulated on the occasion of its 100th anniversary.
