Florida Senate - 2013 (NP) SR 1896 By Senator Legg 17-01849A-13 20131896__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing the 40th anniversary of 3 Pasco-Hernando Community College. 4 5 WHEREAS, in 1967, the Legislature established Pasco 6 Hernando Community College (PHCC) as the 28th and final 7 community college, and 8 WHEREAS, under the leadership of PHCC’s district board of 9 trustees, the college began operations and enrolled its first 10 student in the fall of 1972, and 11 WHEREAS, through the generosity of the citizens of Pasco 12 and Hernando Counties, land was purchased in Dade City and 13 Governor Reubin O’Donovan Askew dedicated the first building on 14 PHCC’s East Campus in Dade City in 1975, and 15 WHEREAS, to serve all 1,200 square miles of its district 16 through conveniently located facilities and to carry out the 17 vision of its district board of trustees, PHCC currently 18 operates campuses in Brooksville, Dade City, New Port Richey, 19 and Spring Hill, and is constructing the Porter Campus at 20 Wiregrass Ranch, a new, full-service campus scheduled to open in 21 Wesley Chapel in 2014, and 22 WHEREAS, PHCC has awarded more than 32,000 degrees and 23 other academic credentials and claims among its distinguished 24 alumni a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist; several current and 25 former members of the Legislature, state executive branch, and 26 United States Congress; and doctors, lawyers, law enforcement 27 officers, educators, nurses, radiographers, paramedics, 28 paralegals, computer and Internet technicians, welders, and 29 numerous other professionals, and 30 WHEREAS, PHCC serves more than 15,000 students annually and 31 currently offers more than 60 career and academic programs, as 32 well as a wide variety of continuing education, corporate 33 training, and other educational options, to serve the needs of 34 the citizens and businesses of Pasco and Hernando Counties, and 35 WHEREAS, the college maintains active and successful 36 student development and engagement programs, which have earned 37 national and state recognition, as well as intercollegiate 38 athletic programs, which have won several regional and state 39 championships and a national championship in women’s volleyball 40 in 2010, and 41 WHEREAS, PHCC continues to maintain its accreditation with 42 the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of 43 Colleges and Schools to award the associate degree, NOW, 44 THEREFORE, 45 46 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 47 48 That Pasco-Hernando Community College is congratulated on its 49 40th anniversary and recognized for the efforts of its dedicated 50 board of trustees, administrators, faculty, staff, and students. 51 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be 52 presented to Pasco-Hernando Community College as a tangible 53 token of the sentiments expressed herein.
