Florida Senate - 2013 (NP) SR 1924 By Senator Bradley 7-05653-13 20131924__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution commending the University of Florida 3 women’s gymnastics team for winning its first National 4 Collegiate Athletic Association women’s gymnastics 5 title, as well as the Southeastern Conference and NCAA 6 Regional championships for 2013. 7 8 WHEREAS, the University of Florida (UF) has a long and 9 storied tradition of athletic excellence, and 10 WHEREAS, on April 20, 2013, in Los Angeles, UF’s women’s 11 gymnastics team won the university’s 30th national title, and 12 WHEREAS, the gymnastics team swept the team titles in each 13 of the three championship meets it competed in during the 2013 14 season: the Southeastern Conference, the NCAA Regional, and the 15 NCAA Championships, and 16 WHEREAS, UF is the fifth team to claim the NCAA Women’s 17 Gymnastics Championship, joining Alabama, UCLA, Georgia, and 18 Utah, since the NCAA began fielding women’s championships in the 19 1981-1982 season, and 20 WHEREAS, the Gators entered the NCAA Championships as the 21 top-seeded, top-ranked team in seven of the final nine national 22 rankings of the 2013 season, and 23 WHEREAS, the Gators rallied from counting a fall in their 24 opening rotation—the balance beam—and on the team’s next event, 25 floor exercise, the Gators turned in an NCAA Championship record 26 event total of 49.725 points, and 27 WHEREAS, on the final day of the NCAA Championships, two 28 Gators picked up event titles, and 29 WHEREAS, six Gators picked up 16 All-America honors, 30 equaling the school record set in 2012, and 31 WHEREAS, UF has appeared in 31 of the possible 32 NCAA 32 Gymnastics Championships, and 33 WHEREAS, of the nation’s top eight team totals of 2013, 34 five were turned in by the Gators in their last nine meets, NOW, 35 THEREFORE, 36 37 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 38 39 That we commend the University of Florida women’s 40 gymnastics team for winning its first National Collegiate 41 Athletic Association women’s gymnastics title as well as the 42 Southeastern Conference and NCAA Regional championships for 43 2013. 44 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be 45 presented to UF President Dr. J. Bernard Machen as a tangible 46 token of the sentiments expressed in this resolution.
