Florida Senate - 2013 (NP) SR 414 By Senator Richter 23-00669-13 2013414__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing July 2013 as “Bladder Cancer 3 Awareness Month” in Florida. 4 5 WHEREAS, bladder cancer is the fifth most common cancer in 6 the United States, and 7 WHEREAS, men have a 1 in 27 chance and women have a 1 in 86 8 chance of being diagnosed with bladder cancer in their lifetime, 9 and 10 WHEREAS, every year in the United States approximately 11 70,000 new cases of bladder cancer are diagnosed and nearly 12 14,000 people die from the disease, and 13 WHEREAS, bladder cancer occurs in more women annually than 14 cervical cancer, and 15 WHEREAS, women often have a delayed diagnosis due to 16 bladder cancer being mistaken for common gynecological problems, 17 and 18 WHEREAS, although bladder cancer can occur at any age, a 19 high percentage of people suffering from the disease are over 20 the age of 55, and 21 WHEREAS, due to a nearly 80 percent recurrence rate, 22 bladder cancer is one of the most expensive cancers to treat, 23 NOW, THEREFORE, 24 25 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 26 27 That July 2013 is recognized as “Bladder Cancer Awareness 28 Month” in Florida.
