Florida Senate - 2013 SB 636 By Senator Soto 14-01133-13 2013636__ 1 A bill to be entitled 2 An act relating to students with limited English 3 proficiency; amending s. 1003.56, F.S.; authorizing 4 exemption from certain state standardized assessments 5 up to a specified period if certain conditions are 6 met; providing an effective date. 7 8 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 9 10 Section 1. Subsection (5) of section 1003.56, Florida 11 Statutes, is renumbered as subsection (6), and a new subsection 12 (5) is added to that section to read: 13 1003.56 English language instruction for limited English 14 proficient students.— 15 (5) A student with limited English proficiency who has 16 received services for 2 years or less in an ESOL program 17 operated in accordance with an approved school district English 18 language learner plan may be exempt from taking the FCAT, end 19 of-course assessments, common core state standards assessments, 20 or any future state standardized academic assessment if a 21 majority of the student’s English language learner committee 22 determines that it is appropriate. 23 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2013.
