    1                          Senate Resolution                        
    2         A resolution designating October 13, 2014, as
    3         “Lancelot Jones Day” in Florida.
    4  
    5         WHEREAS, born in 1898 on a 22-foot boat in Biscayne Bay,
    6  entrepreneur and farmer Sir Lancelot Garfield Jones prospered by
    7  supplying the nation with Key limes and was an expert fishing
    8  guide sought by five presidents, numerous senators, influential
    9  industrialists, and other cultural icons eager to experience the
   10  beauty of the bay’s wildlife, and
   11         WHEREAS, Sir Lancelot Garfield Jones lived most of his 99
   12  years on the island of Porgy Key, which was first settled by his
   13  pioneer father and Bahamian mother in 1897 in an area long
   14  associated with African-American maritime history and which is
   15  now on the National Register of Historic Places, and
   16         WHEREAS, often referred to as “the Sage of Caesar Creek,”
   17  Sir Lancelot Garfield Jones became an educator of schoolchildren
   18  and a conservationist whose resolute values toward the
   19  preservation of Biscayne Bay greatly contributed to the
   20  establishment of Biscayne National Park, which was created to
   21  preserve and protect area wildlife for the education,
   22  inspiration, recreation, and enjoyment of present and future
   23  generations, and
   24         WHEREAS, Biscayne National Park is home to a rare
   25  combination of terrestrial, marine, and amphibious life in a
   26  tropical setting of great natural beauty, which annually draws
   27  an average of 500,000 visitors, contributes more than $34
   28  million to the state’s economy, and supports 422 jobs, and
   29         WHEREAS, the invaluable efforts of Sir Lancelot Garfield
   30  Jones to preserve the land he loved and to ensure that future
   31  generations would delight in its beauty and abundance have
   32  resulted in significant economic, ecological, and cultural
   33  contributions to the state, its heritage, and its future, NOW,
   34  THEREFORE,

   36  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

   38         That October 13, 2014, is designated as “Lancelot Jones
   39  Day” in Florida.
