    1                          Senate Resolution                        
    2         A resolution recognizing the outstanding performance
    3         of Florida State University quarterback Jameis Winston
    4         during the 2013 football season and congratulating him
    5         on his election as the 2013 recipient of the Heisman
    6         Memorial Trophy.

    8         WHEREAS, Jameis Winston was born on January 6, 1994, and
    9  attended Hueytown High School in Hueytown, Alabama, where he was
   10  regarded by many experts as the best high school quarterback in
   11  the nation, and
   12         WHEREAS, with offers from several universities, including
   13  Stanford University, the University of Alabama, and Ohio State
   14  University, on February 2, 2012, Jameis Winston signed his
   15  letter of intent to attend Florida State University, and
   16         WHEREAS, on September 2, 2013, as a redshirt freshman,
   17  Jameis Winston started his first game as quarterback of the
   18  Florida State University Seminoles playing against the
   19  University of Pittsburgh Panthers, where he quickly made himself
   20  known by completing 25 of 27 passes for 356 yards and 4
   21  touchdowns, and
   22         WHEREAS, Jameis Winston helped lead the 2013 Seminoles
   23  football team to a perfect 12-0 regular season, an Atlantic
   24  Coast Conference Championship, and the 2014 Vizio Bowl
   25  Championship Series National Championship, and
   26         WHEREAS, completing his season with 4,057 passing yards and
   27  a school single-season record of 40 passing touchdowns, Jameis
   28  Winston became the first freshman quarterback in college history
   29  to throw 4,000 passing yards and 40 touchdown passes, and
   30         WHEREAS, at the Home Depot College Football Awards on
   31  December 12, 2013, Jameis Winston was awarded the Walter Camp
   32  Player of the Year Award and the Davey O’Brien National
   33  Quarterback Award, and
   34         WHEREAS, on December 14, 2013, less than a month before his
   35  20th birthday, Jameis Winston became the second freshman, and
   36  the youngest player ever, to win the Heisman Memorial Trophy,
   37  college football’s most coveted and prestigious player award,
   38  and
   39         WHEREAS, Jameis Winston is the third Florida State
   40  University football player to win the Heisman Memorial Trophy,
   41  following fellow quarterback legends Charlie Ward and Chris
   42  Weinke, NOW, THEREFORE,

   44  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
   45  
   46         That the Florida Senate recognizes the outstanding
   47  performance of Florida State University quarterback Jameis
   48  Winston during the 2013 football season and congratulates him on
   49  his election as the 2013 recipient of the Heisman Memorial
   50  Trophy.
   51         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
   52  presented to Jameis Winston as a tangible token of the
   53  sentiments expressed in this resolution.
