Florida Senate - 2014 SM 1298 By Senator Brandes 22-01451-14 20141298__ 1 Senate Memorial 2 A memorial to the Congress of the United States, 3 urging Congress to pass the Disaster Savings Account 4 Act to encourage the mitigation of property damage and 5 costs before a natural disaster strikes. 6 7 WHEREAS, Florida has a unique hurricane and flood risk and 8 the most expensive homeowners’ insurance in the nation, and 9 WHEREAS, mitigation before a disaster strikes creates safer 10 structures and reduces the impact of natural disasters, thereby 11 reducing property damage and costs, including insurance costs, 12 associated with these disasters, and 13 WHEREAS, the creation of tax-exempt disaster savings 14 accounts will encourage homeowners to mitigate their homes from 15 future natural disasters, NOW, THEREFORE, 16 17 Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 18 19 That the Congress of the United States is urged to pass the 20 Disaster Savings Account Act creating disaster savings accounts 21 to pay expenses for mitigating the effects of a disaster. 22 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be 23 dispatched to the President of the United States, to the 24 President of the United States Senate, to the Speaker of the 25 United States House of Representatives, and to each member of 26 the Florida delegation to the United States Congress.
