    1                          Senate Resolution                        
    2         A resolution recognizing July 2014 as “Bladder Cancer
    3         Awareness Month” in Florida.
    4  
    5         WHEREAS, according to the Centers for Disease Control and
    6  Prevention, bladder cancer is the sixth most common cancer in
    7  the United States, and
    8         WHEREAS, among the states, Florida has the fourth largest
    9  population, the third highest incidence of bladder cancer, and
   10  the second highest rate of bladder cancer deaths in the country,
   11  and
   12         WHEREAS, bladder cancer is the fourth most common cancer in
   13  men and the tenth most common cancer in women, and
   14         WHEREAS, men have a 1 in 26 chance and women have a 1 in 90
   15  chance of being diagnosed with bladder cancer in their
   16  lifetimes, and
   17         WHEREAS, this year in the United States, approximately
   18  73,000 new cases of bladder cancer will be diagnosed and nearly
   19  15,000 people will die from the disease, and
   20         WHEREAS, bladder cancer occurs in more women annually than
   21  cervical cancer, and
   22         WHEREAS, women often have a delayed diagnosis due to
   23  bladder cancer being mistaken for common gynecological problems,
   24  and
   25         WHEREAS, although bladder cancer can occur at any age, a
   26  high percentage of people suffering from the disease are over
   27  the age of 55, and
   28         WHEREAS, even though bladder cancer is the sixth most
   29  common cancer in the United States, it ranks twenty-second in
   30  research money received, and
   31         WHEREAS, due to a recurrence rate of 50 to 80 percent,
   32  bladder cancer is one of the most expensive cancers to treat,
   33  NOW, THEREFORE,

   35  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
   36  
   37         That July 2014 is recognized as “Bladder Cancer Awareness
   38  Month” in Florida.
