    1                        A bill to be entitled                      
    2         An act relating to limited English proficient
    3         students; amending s. 1003.56, F.S.; authorizing
    4         exemption from certain state standardized assessments
    5         for limited English proficient students under certain
    6         circumstances; providing an effective date.

    8  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
    9  
   10         Section 1. Present subsection (5) of section 1003.56,
   11  Florida Statutes, is renumbered as subsection (6), and a new
   12  subsection (5) is added to that section, to read:
   13         1003.56 English language instruction for limited English
   14  proficient students.—
   15         (5) A limited English proficient student who has received
   16  services for 2 years or less in an ESOL program operated in
   17  accordance with a school district’s approved English Language
   18  Learner plan may be exempt from taking the FCAT, end-of-course
   19  assessments, common core assessments, or any future state
   20  standardized academic assessment if a majority of the student’s
   21  English Language Learner committee members determine that the
   22  exemption is appropriate.
   23         Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2014.
