Florida Senate - 2014 SB 984 By Senator Bullard 39-00587-14 2014984__ 1 A bill to be entitled 2 An act relating to classroom instruction; creating s. 3 1003.291, F.S.; authorizing a district school board to 4 apply to the Commissioner of Education to provide at 5 least 200 days of instruction within a school year 6 under certain circumstances; increasing the annual 7 allocation for funding for a school district that is 8 approved for the additional days of instruction; 9 requiring the school district to ensure that the 10 school year ends before a specified date; providing an 11 effective date. 12 13 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 14 15 Section 1. Section 1003.291, Florida Statutes, is created 16 to read: 17 1003.291 Extending the days for classroom instruction. 18 Notwithstanding s. 1003.02(1)(g), a district school board may 19 apply to the Commissioner of Education to provide at least 200 20 days of classroom instruction within a fiscal year if the school 21 district obtains the commissioner’s approval by November 1 of 22 the fiscal year that precedes the beginning of the school year 23 for which the school district is requesting approval. If the 24 district school board obtains the commissioner’s approval, the 25 school district shall receive a 15 percent increase in its 26 annual allocation for funding for the fiscal year that is 27 approved for the additional days of instruction. The school 28 district shall ensure that the last day of instruction occurs 29 before June 30. 30 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2014.
