Florida Senate - 2015 (NP) SR 1570 By Senator Sobel 33-02041-15 20151570__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing the week of April 12-19, 3 2015, as the “Days of Remembrance” and April 16, 2015, 4 as “Holocaust Remembrance Day” in Florida. 5 6 WHEREAS, the Holocaust, the state-sponsored, systematic 7 persecution and annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany 8 and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945, resulted in the 9 murder of six million Jews, and 10 WHEREAS, in addition, Roma, also known as Gypsies, and 11 Poles were targeted for decimation for racial, ethnic, or 12 national reasons, and millions more, including persons with 13 disabilities, homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Soviet prisoners 14 of war, and political dissidents, suffered grievous oppression 15 and death under Nazi tyranny, and 16 WHEREAS, the history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity 17 to reflect on the moral responsibilities of individuals, 18 societies, and governments, particularly to remain vigilant 19 against hatred, persecution, and tyranny, and 20 WHEREAS, pursuant to an Act of Congress, the United States 21 Holocaust Memorial Council was established, and the council has 22 designated April 12 through April 19, 2015, as the “Days of 23 Remembrance” for the victims of the Holocaust, including 24 “Holocaust Remembrance Day,” known as Yom HaShoah, on April 16, 25 2015, and 26 WHEREAS, in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, in 27 honor of its survivors, and in utmost gratitude for the risks 28 taken by rescuers and liberators, the residents of this state 29 are encouraged to rededicate themselves to the principles of 30 human dignity and individual freedom in a just society, thereby 31 ensuring that such atrocities are never repeated, NOW, 32 THEREFORE, 33 34 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 35 36 That the week of April 12-19, 2015, is recognized as the 37 “Days of Remembrance,” and April 16, 2015, is recognized as 38 “Holocaust Remembrance Day” in Florida.
