Florida Senate - 2016 SB 1586 By Senator Smith 31-01609-16 20161586__ 1 A bill to be entitled 2 An act relating to private security services; 3 providing a short title; amending s. 493.6303, F.S.; 4 requiring an applicant for licensure as an armed 5 security officer to complete substance abuse and 6 mental illness coursework and provide a statement from 7 a mental health professional; providing an effective 8 date. 9 10 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 11 12 Section 1. This act may be cited as the “Kijuan Byrd and 13 Michael Smathers Act.” 14 Section 2. Subsection (5) of section 493.6303, Florida 15 Statutes, is amended to read: 16 493.6303 License requirements.—In addition to the license 17 requirements set forth elsewhere in this chapter, each 18 individual or agency must comply with the following additional 19 requirements: 20 (5) An applicant for a Class “G” license shall: 21 (a) Satisfy the firearms training outlined in s. 493.6115. 22 (b) Successfully complete substance abuse and mental 23 illness coursework at a school or training facility licensed by 24 the department. The department shall establish by rule the 25 general content and number of hours for such coursework. 26 (c) Provide a statement from a mental health professional 27 licensed in this state attesting that the applicant has been 28 evaluated and does not have a mental illness. 29 Section 3. This act shall take effect July 1, 2016.
