    1                          Senate Resolution                        
    2         A resolution recognizing May 2016 as “Brain Tumor
    3         Awareness Month” in Florida.
    4  
    5         WHEREAS, nearly 700,000 people in the United States are
    6  living with a primary brain tumor, a benign or malignant tumor
    7  that originates in the brain, with 138,000 of those tumors found
    8  to be malignant, and
    9         WHEREAS, this year, nearly 70,000 Americans will be
   10  diagnosed with a primary brain tumor, and an estimated 14,000
   11  people will die from brain cancer, and
   12         WHEREAS, the average survival rate for malignant brain
   13  tumor and central nervous system tumor patients is 34.4 percent,
   14  and
   15         WHEREAS, brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer
   16  related deaths in children younger than 14 years of age, and the
   17  second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in children
   18  younger than 20 years of age, and
   19         WHEREAS, the incidence of brain cancer in this state is
   20  reflective of its incidence nationwide, and
   21         WHEREAS, patients and families are striving to raise brain
   22  tumor awareness and medical researchers are working to find
   23  cures for brain tumors and to improve the quality of life for
   24  those diagnosed with brain tumors, and
   25         WHEREAS, the month of May has been designated as National
   26  Brain Tumor Awareness Month, NOW, THEREFORE,

   28  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
   29  
   30         That May 2016 is recognized as “Brain Tumor Awareness
   31  Month” in Florida, and the residents of this state are urged to
   32  support brain tumor research with the fervent hope of finding a
   33  cure.
