Florida Senate - 2016 (NP) SR 1794 By Senator Latvala 20-05104-16 20161794__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing and commending the Moffitt 3 Cancer Center on the occasion of its 30th anniversary. 4 5 WHEREAS, in 1981, the Legislature passed a bill creating 6 the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, and 7 construction of the project began in 1983, and 8 WHEREAS, the Moffitt Cancer Center opened in 1986 and in 9 1989 launched the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program, and 10 WHEREAS, in 1993, Moffitt Cancer Center Screening and 11 Prevention opened, followed in 1995 by the Moffitt Research 12 Center, and 13 WHEREAS, in 1998, the Moffitt Cancer Center earned a 14 National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Center Support Grant, and 15 the Legislature appropriated $100 million to expand research and 16 clinical programs, and 17 WHEREAS, in 2001, the Moffitt Cancer Center earned NCI 18 Comprehensive Cancer Center status and in 2003 opened the 19 Vincent A. Stabile Research Building and an expanded Muriel 20 Rothman Building, and 21 WHEREAS, in 2003 the Moffitt Cancer Center launched Total 22 Cancer Care, an innovative program that seeks to overcome 23 economic and geographic barriers to advanced cancer care, and 24 WHEREAS, in 2009, the Moffitt Cancer Center opened the 25 South Expansion, where two new Varian Trilogy units and a new 26 Pinnacle Treatment Planning System have been installed and are 27 in use in the Radiation Oncology Section, and 28 WHEREAS, in 2011, the Moffitt Cancer Center at 29 International Plaza opened, and Moffitt South moved to a 30 location near Tampa International Airport and International 31 Plaza, and 32 WHEREAS, in 2015 the modern, 207,000-square-foot Moffitt 33 McKinley Outpatient Center opened, fulfilling a critical need 34 for expanded outpatient services, and 35 WHEREAS, the Moffitt Cancer Center, the state’s only NCI 36 designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and the state leader in 37 treatment, research, and training, treats 1,000 patients each 38 day as the third-largest and fastest-growing cancer center in 39 the nation, and 40 WHEREAS, the Moffitt Cancer Center has grown from 400 41 employees to more than 5,000, and has a nearly $2 billion 42 economic impact, with more than 100 patent applications, and 43 WHEREAS, the Moffitt Cancer Center is training more than 44 1,800 students annually to address the critical future shortage 45 of oncologists in this state, and 46 WHEREAS, the Moffitt Cancer Center is leading the state in 47 research, with nearly 12,000 patients placed in clinical trials 48 in the past 5 years, NOW, THEREFORE, 49 50 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 51 52 That the Senate recognizes and commends the Moffitt Cancer 53 Center on the occasion of its 30th anniversary.
