1 Senate Resolution
2 A resolution recognizing May 2016 as “Bladder Cancer
3 Awareness Month” in Florida.

5 WHEREAS, according to the National Cancer Institute,
6 bladder cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the United
7 States, and
8 WHEREAS, among all states, Florida has the third largest
9 population, ranked second in the number of new bladder cancer
10 cases expected in 2015, and was second in the total number of
11 bladder cancer deaths expected during that year, and
12 WHEREAS, bladder cancer is the fourth most common cancer in
13 men and the eleventh most common cancer in women, and
14 WHEREAS, men have a 1 in 26 chance and women have a 1 in 90
15 chance of being diagnosed with bladder cancer during their
16 lifetimes, according to the American Cancer Society, and
17 WHEREAS, this year in the United States, an estimated
18 74,000 new cases of bladder cancer will be diagnosed, and nearly
19 16,000 people will die from the disease, and
20 WHEREAS, bladder cancer consistently occurs in more women
21 each year than does cervical cancer, and
22 WHEREAS, women often have a delayed diagnosis of bladder
23 cancer, their early signs of cancer mistaken for symptoms of
24 common gynecological problems, and
25 WHEREAS, although bladder cancer can occur at any age, a
26 high percentage of people suffering from the disease are older
27 than 55, and
28 WHEREAS, even though bladder cancer is the sixth most
29 common cancer in the United States, it ranked 21st in National
30 Cancer Institute research money received in 2013, and
31 WHEREAS, due to a recurrence rate of 50 to 80 percent,
32 bladder cancer is one of the most expensive cancers to treat,
33 NOW, THEREFORE,

35 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

37 That May 2016 is recognized as “Bladder Cancer Awareness
38 Month” in Florida.
