    1                        A bill to be entitled                      
    2         An act relating to law enforcement officer training;
    3         amending s. 943.1716, F.S.; expanding the instruction
    4         that the Criminal Justice Standards and Training
    5         Commission requires of a law enforcement officer to
    6         include interpersonal skills relating to racial
    7         minorities; providing an effective date.

    9  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
   10  
   11         Section 1. Section 943.1716, Florida Statutes, is amended
   12  to read:
   13         943.1716 Continued employment training relating to diverse
   14  populations.—The commission shall by rule require that each
   15  officer receive, as part of the 40 hours of required instruction
   16  for continued employment or appointment as an officer,
   17  instruction in the subject of interpersonal skills relating to
   18  diverse populations and racial minorities, with an emphasis on
   19  the awareness of cultural differences, how racial bias impacts
   20  interactions with racial minorities, and ways to combat inherent
   21  biases.
   22         Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2016.
