Florida Senate - 2017 (NP) SR 1808 By Senator Bean 4-02009-17 20171808__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing September 13, 2017, as “See 3 the Girl Day” in Florida. 4 5 WHEREAS, Delores Barr Weaver is a lifelong advocate for 6 girls and young women, and her vision, passion, leadership, and 7 philanthropy are nationally known and have enriched the 8 Jacksonville community, and 9 WHEREAS, the Delores Barr Weaver Policy Center in 10 Jacksonville is a nonprofit organization established in 2013 as 11 the outgrowth of the girls’ justice reform movement that began 12 more than 15 years ago, and 13 WHEREAS, the nonprofit Delores Barr Weaver Policy Center’s 14 mission is guided by girl-centered principles, and the work of 15 the center focuses on training and the development of model 16 programming to advance the rights of girls and young women, 17 particularly those in the justice system, and 18 WHEREAS, since its founding, the work of the Delores Barr 19 Weaver Policy Center has focused on reducing the number of girls 20 and young women who are incarcerated, and, during the lifetime 21 of the center, there has been a 67 percent decrease in the 22 number of girls incarcerated in Duval County and a 48 percent 23 decrease in the number of girls incarcerated on the First Coast, 24 and 25 WHEREAS, the Delores Barr Weaver Policy Center’s call to 26 action, “See the Girl,” has inspired the community to see girls 27 for who they are and who they can become, and 28 WHEREAS, on September 13, 2017, the Delores Barr Weaver 29 Policy Center will celebrate the birthday of its founder and her 30 legacy of love and empowerment, NOW, THEREFORE, 31 32 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 33 34 That September 13, 2017, is recognized as “See the Girl 35 Day” in Florida and all Floridians are urged to show their 36 support for girls and young women at risk for involvement in the 37 justice system.
