1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to the visitation of schools by state
3 legislators; amending s. 1001.4205, F.S.; authorizing
4 a member of the State Legislature to visit any
5 district school, including any charter school, in his
6 or her legislative district; providing an effective
7 date.

9 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

11 Section 1. Section 1001.4205, Florida Statutes, is amended
12 to read:
13 1001.4205 Visitation of schools by an individual school
14 board or charter school governing board member.—An individual
15 member of a district school board may, on any day and at any
16 time at his or her pleasure, visit any district school in his or
17 her school district. An individual member of the State
18 Legislature may, on any day and at any time at his or her
19 pleasure, visit any district school, including any charter
20 school, in his or her legislative district. An individual member
21 of a charter school governing board member may, on any day and
22 at any time at his or her pleasure, visit any charter school
23 governed by the charter school’s governing board.
24 (1) The visiting individual board member must sign in and
25 sign out at the school’s main office and wear his or her board
26 or State Legislature identification badge, as applicable, at all
27 times while present on school premises.
28 (2) The board, the school, or any other person or entity,
29 including, but not limited to, the principal of the school, the
30 school superintendent, or any other board member, may not
31 require the visiting individual board member to provide notice
32 before visiting the school.
33 (3) The school may offer, but may not require, an escort to
34 accompany the a visiting individual board member during the
35 visit.
36 (4) A Another board member or a district employee,
37 including, but not limited to, the superintendent, the school
38 principal, or the superintendent’s or the principal’s his or her
39 designee, may not limit the duration or scope of the visit or
40 direct the a visiting individual board member to leave the
41 premises.
42 (5) A board, district, or school administrative policy or
43 practice may not prohibit or limit the authority granted to the
44 visiting individual a board member under this section.
45 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2018.
