Florida Senate - 2018 (NP) SR 1800 By Senator Campbell 38-01692A-18 20181800__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing the Little Haiti Ecodistrict 3 as it works to revitalize the re-emerging Little Haiti 4 neighborhood. 5 6 WHEREAS, approximately 3.5 square miles in size, the 7 culturally vibrant Little Haiti neighborhood within the City of 8 Miami is nestled adjacent to the world-renowned Miami Design 9 District and reflects the diversity of Miami’s cultural 10 heritage, and 11 WHEREAS, during the late 1970s and early 1980s, large 12 numbers of Haitian immigrants settled in the area known as 13 Little Haiti, creating a vibrant neighborhood, as was envisioned 14 by its founding father, Viter Juste, and 15 WHEREAS, today, Little Haiti is home to approximately 16 30,000 residents, most of whom are of Afro-Caribbean and Haitian 17 descent, and 18 WHEREAS, in May 2016, community stakeholders and Haitian 19 Americans joined forces to fight to preserve the identity of the 20 neighborhood, and the City of Miami voted to officially 21 designate the area as Little Haiti, and 22 WHEREAS, in June 2017, the Little Haiti Ecodistrict was 23 founded to further galvanize support for the preservation of the 24 culture and resilience of the neighborhood, while developing 25 synergies with Miami-Dade County’s future transit-oriented 26 development initiatives, and 27 WHEREAS, rooted in equity, resilience, and climate 28 protection, the Little Haiti Ecodistrict will work toward the 29 long-term socioeconomic and cultural vitality of Little Haiti 30 and will serve as a model for future responsible neighborhood 31 development, NOW, THEREFORE, 32 33 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 34 35 That the Little Haiti Ecodistrict is recognized as it works 36 to revitalize the re-emerging Little Haiti neighborhood.
