Florida Senate - 2018 (NP) SR 1808 By Senator Campbell 38-01392A-18 20181808__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing the City of Sunny Isles Beach 3 on the occasion of the 21st anniversary of its 4 incorporation. 5 6 WHEREAS, the City of Sunny Isles Beach was first christened 7 as Sunny Isles when private investor Harvey Baker Graves 8 purchased a 2.26-square-mile tract of land in 1920 for 9 development as a tourist resort, and 10 WHEREAS, after the Haulover Bridge was completed in 1925 11 and made the area accessible from Miami Beach, developers began 12 to create islands and peninsulas for building waterfront 13 properties on Biscayne Bay, and 14 WHEREAS, Milwaukee malt magnate Kurtis Froedtert bought 15 Sunny Isles in 1936 and built the Sunny Isles Pier, a popular 16 tourist destination, and 17 WHEREAS, during the 1950s and 1960s, more than 30 motels 18 were built along Collins Avenue, including the first two-story 19 motel in the United States, and 20 WHEREAS, Sunny Isles was incorporated as the City of Sunny 21 Isles Beach on June 16, 1997, and 22 WHEREAS, the City of Sunny Isles Beach is led by Mayor 23 George “Bud” Scholl, Vice Mayor Dana Goldman, City Manager 24 Christopher J. Russo and council members Isaac Aelion, Jeanette 25 Gatto, and Larisa Svechin, NOW, THEREFORE, 26 27 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 28 29 That the City of Sunny Isles Beach is recognized on the 30 occasion of the 21st anniversary of its incorporation.
