Florida Senate - 2018 SR 1840 By Senator Campbell 38-01345A-18 20181840__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing the Town of Bay Harbor 3 Islands on the occasion of the 71st anniversary of its 4 incorporation. 5 6 WHEREAS, the Town of Bay Harbor Islands grew out of the 7 vision of Shepard Broad, who came to America from Pinsk, 8 Belarus, in 1920 when he was just 14 years of age, and 9 WHEREAS, after receiving a degree from New York Law School, 10 Mr. Broad practiced law in New York until 1940, when he and his 11 wife Ruth moved to South Florida, and 12 WHEREAS, in 1945, the Broads acquired two low-lying, 13 undeveloped swamp islands off 96th Street on Miami Beach, which 14 he filled and on which he began constructing residences, and 15 WHEREAS, in 1947, the Town of Bay Harbor Islands was 16 incorporated and in 1953 was officially authorized by the 17 Florida Legislature, and 18 WHEREAS, Mr. Broad was elected the first mayor of the Town 19 of Bay Harbor Islands and served 26 consecutive years until his 20 retirement from office in 1973, and he died at his home on 21 November 6, 2001, and 22 WHEREAS, the Town of Bay Harbor Islands is led by Mayor 23 Jordan W. Leonard, Vice Mayor Stephanie Bruder, and council 24 members Joshua D. Fuller, Kelly Reid, Isaac Salver, Elizabeth 25 Tricoche, and Robert Yaffe, and the Town Manager is Ronald J. 26 Wasson, NOW, THEREFORE, 27 28 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 29 30 That the Town of Bay Harbor Islands is recognized on the 31 occasion of the 71st anniversary of its incorporation.
