Florida Senate - 2018 (NP) SR 1926 By Senator Montford 3-02990-18 20181926__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing and celebrating the 40th 3 anniversary of the preservation of Florida’s 1902 4 Historic Capitol. 5 6 WHEREAS, on May 29, 1978, the Florida Senate passed CS/SB 7 678, which sought to preserve Florida’s 1902 Historic Capitol in 8 perpetuity, and 9 WHEREAS, on June 1, 1978, the Florida House of 10 Representatives joined the Florida Senate in passing the bill 11 and, on the following day, it was approved by then-Governor 12 Reubin Askew, and 13 WHEREAS, at the time of the bill’s passage, Florida’s 1902 14 Historic Capitol was the fifth-oldest capitol in continuous use 15 in the United States, having served as the center of government 16 for Florida since the territorial period, and 17 WHEREAS, Florida’s 1902 Historic Capitol is the most 18 historically important state government building in Florida, and 19 WHEREAS, Florida’s 1902 Historic Capitol today serves as a 20 museum with the purpose of educating our children, residents, 21 and visitors about our state’s past and its future, NOW, 22 THEREFORE, 23 24 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 25 26 That the Florida Senate hereby recognizes and celebrates 27 the 40th anniversary of the preservation of Florida’s 1902 28 Historic Capitol and congratulates and commends its predecessors 29 for undertaking the protection of this historic site and symbol 30 of state government in Florida.
