Florida Senate - 2018 (NP) SR 1936 By Senator Bradley 5-00297-18 20181936__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing April 2018 as “Springs 3 Protection Awareness Month” in Florida. 4 5 WHEREAS, Florida’s springs are essential to the 6 environment, economy, residents of, and visitors to, this state, 7 and 8 WHEREAS, the Floridan Aquifer, one of the most productive 9 in the world, supports more than 700 natural springs, giving 10 this state the world’s highest concentration of springs, and 11 WHEREAS, groundwater plays a vital role in the state’s 12 economy, and more than 93 percent of Florida residents rely on 13 this groundwater supply for their drinking water, and 14 WHEREAS, springs are a natural resource that must be 15 protected because they reflect groundwater conditions and 16 provide an important habitat for wildlife, including species 17 listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species 18 Act, and 19 WHEREAS, springs also provide important recreational 20 resources and opportunities that are enjoyed by residents and 21 visitors alike, and 22 WHEREAS, Florida’s more than 900 natural springs discharge 23 more than 19 billion gallons of fresh water each day, which is 24 essential for sustaining spring runs and associated receiving 25 water bodies, and 26 WHEREAS, healthy springs reflect the State of Florida’s 27 commitment to sustain and protect ground and surface water 28 resources, NOW, THEREFORE, 29 30 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 31 32 That April 2018 is recognized as “Springs Protection 33 Awareness Month” in Florida, and all levels of government are 34 encouraged to support springs protection, restoration, and 35 preservation awareness.
